VOLUNTEERS

If you would like to help out during the parade, but do not have the time to become involved with the planning committee, we can still use your help.  Helpers are needed in the following areas on the day of the parade:

- Staging floats and parade participants

- Manning grandstand and reviewing stand entrances and handling ticket sales

- Manning positions along the parade route to keep things moving smoothly

- Transporting parade participants

- Moving vehicles

Marshals

The parade marshals are the group of individuals who organize the parade units into their predetermined order, start the parade at the designated time, conduct it along its route, and then break it down, directing all of the units to their staged vehicles at the end of the route.  Duties involve assisting individuals in locating their marching units before the parade, directing units to their staging location and preparing them for the start of the parade.  Other duties include the safe and orderly passage of units along the route, dispensing information about the parade to participants and spectators and assisting police and other emergency service responders as needed.  You are given a “marshal” sash to wear that show your official capacity.  The marshals work together as a group. It is another opportunity to meet new people and make new friends!

There will be a Marshal's Meeting at the DC Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge #1 on THURSDAY, MARCH 11th, 2010 at 7:00 PM.  Anyone interested in helping out on the day of the parade is encouraged to attend this meeting.

Parade Marshals begin lining up participating units at 10:00 AM.  Volunteers are given a copy of  the line up, locate reporting units and get them into line in the correct  order.  About 125 units of various descriptions are  expected to participate such as marching bands, antique automobiles,  floats and novelty acts.

Volunteers are asked to report to the corner of 7th and Madison Drive, rear of the National Gallery of Art, about 10:30 AM on parade day (Sunday, March 14).  The last unit moves out of the formation area at approx. 2:30 PM.

This location is METRO friendly.  Arriving volunteers can use either Archives/Navy Memorial or Smithsonian stations.
